How To Build Your Business In Just One Week

Let’s have some real talk about why you haven’t started your business. As we head in 2022, the thought of launching your business may be bouncing around in the back of your mind, but something is stopping you from taking that step. And I think I know what it is…

But, before I get there, I want to share a little insight into my own journey first, if for no other reason than to let you know you’re not alone. 

I built my first business 20 years ago under extreme circumstances and then Claim Your Career alongside my demanding VP position in corporate. The calls, texts, emails, they never stop! 

I’m not saying it was easy, but even with how busy I was, I was able to create the time to start and grow my businesses – twice, as a single mom.

You wanna know how? I quit making excuses, I took a deep dive into finding clarity around what I wanted, and I shifted my mindset.

Now, starting businesses is like second nature to me. I’ve helped many other busy, overwhelmed professionals make it happen so that they can release the burden of living to work and truly start working to live doing something they actually love!

I’m here to share with you a little secret. You have no excuse to NOT start your business. In fact, you can launch a rock solid business in just one week. Let’s look at the foundation you need in place to finally start your business, all of which you can do TODAY:

Understanding Your Purpose

The biggest missing piece you’re currently experiencing in your 9-to-5? FULFILLMENT. 

So many of us just muddle through that 9-5 grind because it pays the bills, but when’s the last time you truly felt inspired by the work you’re doing?

Yes, that’s a legit thing that happens when you feel fulfilled by what you do. In truth, I started Claim Your Career because I was pissed off at the lack of diversity among corporate leadership teams. 

This is it. This is my purpose. Every time I work with a client I can feel it. 

I am able to make an impact, use my gifts, enjoy my work AND it fulfills my personal WHY of being a full-time traveler. And now I’m passionate about helping other people do the same – people such as yourself. 

Inventory What You Know

When you’re an entrepreneur, it’s easy to feel like you’re starting everything new. From scratch. It can happen when you rebrand, launch a website, or even rework your offers.

It only gets worse when you’re at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey…

But never forget this one thing: you’ve lived a whole lot of life before this moment.

That means you’ve developed key skills from your career or past jobs. You’ve connected with people in your communities. You’ve made tough decisions in your day-to-day life.

All of that gives you more knowledge, expertise, and edge than you might originally think!

Here’s a quick-fire checklist for you to save for later:

1. Inventory tasks and skills you do well
2. List out topics you know a lot about
3. Map out your passions (and what you love to do)

Think of it as a mini to-do if you haven’t nailed one or more of these down. Having these will help give you clarity and fortify the foundation of your confidence as a CEO.

You’ll see that you’ve already guided people through tough times. You’ve already supported people. You’ve already given valuable advice that’s helped someone else. You’ve already served people.

You’re not at the starting line. You only have to apply what you’ve already done to this new chapter!

Start Before You’re Ready

If you struggle with getting started, you may see opportunities to stay comfortable in not starting – which is totally normal by the way.

You may see December as the “holiday season” – a reason to wait until January to start. You may see tax season as an opportunity to wait on making investments so you can see how much money you’re getting back. Or, you may look at your kids and decide you’ll wait until they’re older to start your business.

So, how to start before you’re ready? 

That word right there – start. You make the decision. You do it scared. With support, accountability, and the resources you need to lean in, you’ll forget why you let the fear stop you to begin with. It’ll transform, and you’ll find inspiration and excitement in its place. 

Here’s what’s possible for you the moment you decide to start:

• Living your purpose and empowering others through your work

• Having clients excited to reach out to share the impact of your work together

• Having a remote business so that you can travel when you want

• Working a schedule that you create and having uncapped earning potential

• Being your own boss and creating your own path

Now It’s Time To Take Action

My #1 strength according to StrengthsFinders is “Activator” which means that once I make a decision, I have a natural gift to take action to make it happen. I consider this my superpower because it stops me from sitting in fear. I still feel it, but it doesn’t hold me back. But for so many of you who are sitting on the sidelines, it may feel really hard to just do the thing.

We find opportunities to validate our reasons to not take action but in truth, it’s riskier to do nothing then to start doing something. By doing nothing, you’re keeping yourself stuck in a job you don’t love, missing out on the freedom you desire and forgoing the fulfillment of living your purpose and getting to contribute to the world in a meaningful way.
